Linkup Studio expertly designed, developed, and launched the Wholesum platform back in 2016. Since its inception, group meal planning has been simplified for a range of users, from outfitters and summer camps to B&Bs and university outdoor programs. The platform seamlessly adapts recipes and shopping lists according to group sizes while accommodating dietary needs and ingredient substitutions. Users can effortlessly craft shareable meal plans, calculate costs, and schedule meals on a calendar. 

Wholesum proudly collaborates with over 20 official partner organizations and is actively involved in 6 communities, including the American Camp Association, America Outdoors, AORE, among others. These features have already saved “tons of hours” for Wholesum customers. The platform boasts over 500,000 recipes contributed by its user base. Our team recently integrated AI features to enhance its functionality, enabling users to craft a new recipe with a single click and efficiently consolidate existing recipes. To further enrich the user experience, we've also rolled out a mobile app and undertook a comprehensive product redesign.

ClIENT & BUSINESS CHALLENGE

Addressing the Hassles of Manual Group Food Planning

Two founders from Montana approached the Linkup Studio team with an intriguing product idea for businesses that organize outdoor activities. 

Many of these companies expressed difficulties in accommodating a fluctuating number of guests, each with their unique dietary needs. Some mentioned their reliance on outdated Excel spreadsheets — messy, confusing, and decipherable only by those "in the loop." These individuals needed to possess a deep understanding of outfitting, along with the know-how to tweak shopping lists, do intricate manual calculations, and plan efficiently. Such processes are not the case for companies desiring to grow. 

This product idea was to alleviate all these manual work challenges, aiming to streamline every workflow step for outdoor group meal planning.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Exploring Our Contributions and Deliverables

Our primary aim was to cater to all user needs and ensure they had the best customer experience on both the website and mobile apps. To achieve this, we collaborated closely with the founders during the entire development of Wholesum.

  • Market Analysis & Continuous Oversight. Both pre and post-launch, our team at Linkup Studio consistently evaluated the outdoor meal planning market landscape. As a committed tech and design partner, we continually advise clients on necessary changes, from UX/UI enhancements to technological advancements.
  • Recipe Development. Empowering users with a simplified recipe creation experience was central to our mission. We harnessed the capabilities of Chat GPT and integrated its most cost-effective version via a custom-designed API. Through this AI enhancement, our team provided users with the ability to input a meal title, click once, and immediately get the recipe.

    Furthermore, we furnished the platform with the tools to craft recipes manually. They can enter ingredients, quantities, purchasing locations, and even estimated prices. Our team also enabled access to the Wholesum cookbook, where users have the flexibility to tailor recipes to specific outdoor activities or dietary requirements.

    We also enriched the platform by allowing users to tag, filter, and categorize recipes based on meal types and add cooking instructions.
  • Ingredient Management. Understanding the value of personalized ingredient management, we provided users with an optional yet powerful feature that allows comprehensive control over outdoor activity preparations

    Our team ensured users could view a consolidated list of ingredients for all saved meals and append notes for clarity. Recognizing the importance of sustainability, we also empowered users to check off items they might already own, thus reducing potential waste. To further assist in the shopping process, we introduced a sorting mechanism allowing items to be categorized by departments such as dairy or seafood.
  • Meal Planning Tools. Upon finalizing the prior steps, users can formulate meal plans. We introduced an intuitive counter to gauge the number of participants and their appetite levels, enabling accurate serving estimations per meal. Managers can then slot in recipes based on day and meal type for comprehensive planning. Subsequently, we offer the convenience of exporting this data into shopping lists in Excel or PDF format.
  • Mobile App Development. To enhance user convenience, we launched a cross-platform mobile application for both Android and iOS using Flutter, ensuring feature parity with the web version.
  • Website Redesign. The original site, launched in 2016, had become dated. We pinpointed areas where the site failed to communicate its value proposition effectively. As a remedy, we rolled out a revamped, intuitive, and spacious website, articulating the platform's advantages and the benefits of using both the website and mobile apps comprehensively.

Over a span of 7 years, our collaboration with the client culminated in the creation, launch, and continual enhancement of the Wholesum web platform, mobile app, and landing page.

At its core, Wholesum is a user-friendly platform designed to streamline group meal planning for diverse organizations. Regardless of their size or the nature of their activities, users can utilize tools to instantly craft new recipes using intelligent AI, or make manual adjustments. The platform then assists in selecting ingredients that cater to specific dietary needs for outdoor events, and in creating day-to-day menus. Based on these choices, Wholesum generates a detailed shopping list tailored to the event.

Lewis & Clark Trail Adventures attest to Wholesum being a pivotal game-changer for their business. The platform’s adaptive design ensures seamless adjustments responding to changing guest counts. It automatically adjusts food quantities, streamlining the planning process. This solution obviates the need for dedicated personnel to manage complex Excel sheets for meal planning. Instead, it provides an intuitive space for organizing, managing, and modifying plans. As a result, businesses can pivot their focus towards expansion and diversifying their activities, knowing that group meal planning is efficiently handled.
