Skipping user research is one of those decisions that feels efficient until the product ships. Then the support tickets pile up, activation stalls, and the Head of Product schedules a redesign six months after launch that costs three times what a research sprint would have.

The numbers back this up. According to Forrester, every dollar invested in UX returns up to $100 — a 9,900% ROI.I. IBM puts the cost of fixing a usability problem after launch at 100x what it costs to address it during design. And with AI features becoming standard across digital products, the research question has gotten harder: users don't just need to understand the interface anymore. They need to trust that the AI is doing what they think it's doing. That trust has to be designed, and it has to be grounded in research about how real users actually relate to AI outputs — not assumptions.

That's what serious UX research companies do differently. They run the research before the build, not after the damage is done.

Linkup ST is a user experience research company that integrates research directly into customer experience service. Its research packages include usability testing, UX audits and more. Their work is grounded in the Emotional-Functional Framework that covers three aspects of the experience (visceral, behavioral, and reflective): a user's first reaction to the product, what happens when they try to get something done, and how they feel about it after using it for a while. Such design decisions build a solid background for global brands used by more than 70M users worldwide, including concepts that attracted offers of up to $1M from competing players. The company has over 13 years of UI/UX experience, and their work has earned 40+ global recognitions, including Red Dot, Webby, and Apple Design Award.

Best Companies for UX Research: How to Choose the Right Partner in 2026

Match methodology to the actual question

Not every research question needs the same method. So before briefing anyone, get specific about what you actually need to know.

Finding something in a navigation structure? That's a tree testing question. How users change behavior after weeks of using a feature? Diary study. What mental model someone brings to an AI recommendation on first encounter? In-depth interview — and probably more than one.

User experience research firms that default to the same approach regardless of the question aren't doing research. They're running a process. Ask specifically which method they'd recommend for your situation and why. If the answer sounds generic, it probably is.

Check domain expertise before reviewing portfolios

Domain expertise and portfolio are different things — and most companies look at them in the wrong order.

A portfolio shows you finished work. It doesn't show you what the team already knew walking in. A UX research company that's spent years in financial services brings regulatory context, professional user psychology, and enterprise dynamics into the first session. A generalist figures all of that out during your project.

Look at vertical experience first. Then the portfolio.

Look for research that connects directly to design decisions

A research report sitting in a shared folder isn't research. It's documentation.

The companies worth hiring are the ones where researchers and designers work together — where findings flow directly into wireframes, prototypes, and roadmap decisions rather than getting handed off and slowly ignored. Ask specifically: show me how a past research finding changed what your team actually built. The answer tells you everything.
